A Traveller's Guide to Budgeting in Koh Samui

Budget

Koh Samui is a destination that caters to travellers with a diverse range of budgets. Whether you're a backpacker on a shoestring budget, a mid-range adventurer, or a luxury-seeking holidaymaker, you'll find options that suit your pocket. Budget-conscious travellers can choose from affordable guesthouses and street food delights, while mid-range options provide a comfortable balance between cost and comfort. Meanwhile, those seeking indulgence can revel in the luxury resorts and fine dining experiences that Koh Samui has to offer.

Currency

The currency used in Koh Samui and throughout Thailand is the Thai Baht (THB). The Thai Baht is abbreviated as "ΰΈΏ" and is further divided into smaller units, including satang. Banknotes and coins are in circulation, with common banknote denominations of 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1,000 Baht, and coins available in 1, 2, 5, and 10 Baht, as well as various satang coins.

Cash or Card?

While credit cards are widely accepted in tourist areas and larger establishments, it's a good idea to have some Thai Baht in cash for small purchases, transportation, and when visiting local markets or street vendors. You can exchange money at banks, currency exchange offices, and ATMs are also widely available for withdrawing Thai Baht using international debit or credit cards.

Tips and Gratuity

Tipping is appreciated but not always obligatory. In restaurants, it's common to round up the bill or leave a small tip. Tipping for good service is also appreciated in hotels and for tour guides.
