Basic Thai Phrases to Help You Get Around

Learning a few basic Thai phrases can be very helpful when travelling in Thailand, and locals really appreciate the effort. Here are some essential phrases to get you started.

A quick tip on being polite: Thai speakers add a polite word to the end of most sentences. Men say krap and women say ka. So "hello" becomes sawasdee krap or sawasdee ka.

Everyday phrases

Hello / Goodbye: สวัสดี (sa-wat-dee)

Thank you: ขอบคุณ (kop kun)

Yes: ใช่ (chai)

No: ไม่ (mai)

No problem / You're welcome: ไม่เป็นไร (mai pen rai)

Excuse me / Sorry: ขอโทษ (kor toht)

I don't understand: ไม่เข้าใจ (mai kao jai)

Do you speak English?: พูดภาษาอังกฤษได้ไหม (poot pa-sa ang-grit dai mai)

My name is...: ฉันชื่อ... (chan chue...) or ผมชื่อ... (pom chue...) for men

Getting around

Where is...?: ...อยู่ที่ไหน (...yoo tee nai)

Restroom / Toilet: ห้องน้ำ (hong nam)

I'm lost: ฉันหลงทาง (chan long tahng)

Turn left / Turn right: เลี้ยวซ้าย / เลี้ยวขวา (lieow sai / lieow kwah)

Stop here: จอดที่นี่ (jot tee nee)

Shopping and eating

How much is this?: นี่เท่าไหร่ (nee tao rai)

Water: น้ำ (nam)

Food: อาหาร (ah-han)

Delicious: อร่อย (a-roi)

Not spicy: ไม่เผ็ด (mai pet)

A little spicy: เผ็ดนิดหน่อย (pet nit noi)

The bill, please: เช็คบิล (check bin)

In an emergency

I need help: ช่วยฉันหน่อย (chuay chan noi)

Help!: ช่วยด้วย (chuay duay!)
