Private Chef in Koh Samui: Costs, What's Included and How to Book

Concierge6 min read

A private chef in Koh Samui brings restaurant-standard cooking into your villa, with menus built around what you actually feel like eating and ingredients shopped fresh that morning at a local market. For families and groups staying in a villa, it is often the best upgrade of the whole trip.

Quick answer: A private chef in Koh Samui costs from 2,500 THB for breakfast and from 3,500 THB for lunch or dinner. That is a flat fee for a group of up to nine guests, not a per-person charge. On top of the fee you pay for ingredients plus a 20% shopping fee. The chef plans the menu with you, shops at a fresh market, cooks in your villa kitchen, serves, and clears up. Fully custom menus and all dietary requirements are standard.

  • Breakfast from 2,500 THB; lunch or dinner from 3,500 THB.
  • Half day 4,000 THB; full day of cooking 5,000 THB.
  • Prices are the total chef fee for up to nine guests, not per person.
  • Ingredients are extra, plus a 20% shopping fee.
  • Menus are fully customisable and all diets are catered for.

What is a private chef service in Koh Samui?

A private chef service sends a professional cook to your accommodation to prepare meals in your own kitchen. You choose the menu, the timing and the pace, and you dine in the privacy of your villa rather than booking a table somewhere.

The single biggest practical upgrade of a private villa over a hotel is the food. Eating well at home, on your own schedule, with someone who knows the island's markets and cooks Thai food every day, is one of the genuine pleasures of villa life. It also solves a real problem: many of the best villas sit up quiet hillsides or along the south coast, well away from restaurants, so a chef removes the need to drive out for every meal.

What does a private chef in Koh Samui cost?

A private chef in Koh Samui is priced as a flat chef fee for a group of up to nine guests, with ingredients and a 20% shopping fee added on top. These are our current rates.

Chef fees

  • Breakfast: 2,500 THB
  • Lunch or dinner: 3,500 THB
  • Half day (breakfast and lunch, or breakfast and dinner): 4,000 THB
  • Full day of cooking: 5,000 THB

Each price is the total fee for one to nine guests, so the more of you there are, the better the value per head. As a rough budgeting guide, a dinner for a group works out at around £80 or $100 at current exchange rates, before ingredients.

Ingredients and the shopping fee

Ingredients are billed separately, plus a 20% shopping fee on top of their cost. Your chef shops that morning at a local fresh market and buys what is best on the day, which is exactly why the food is fresher than a hotel buffet. You can set an ingredients budget in advance, and premium or imported items such as good wine, imported beef or seafood are quoted before purchase so there are no surprises.

Tipping

Tipping is not required and is never built into the price, but it is warmly received for service you have enjoyed. A tip handed to the chef directly at the end of your stay is the norm.

What is included, and what is not

The chef fee covers everything except the food itself.

Included: travel to your villa, menu planning with you, market shopping, all cooking, serving, and leaving the kitchen clean.

Not included: the cost of ingredients, the 20% shopping fee, premium imported items (always quoted first), and alcohol unless you ask us to arrange it.

How booking a private chef works

Book a private chef in advance, particularly between December and March when villas and chefs are busiest. The process is simple.

  1. Tell us your dates, villa location, group size and the meals you would like covered.
  2. Send a short dietary brief before arrival, noting allergies, dislikes and anything you especially love. Even a paragraph saves guesswork on the first day.
  3. Your chef confirms a menu with you directly, tailored to your group.
  4. On the day, the chef shops, cooks, serves and clears up. You simply come to the table.

Private chef or in-villa Thai cooking class?

Choose a private chef when you want to be cooked for, and choose a cooking class when you want to learn. They are different experiences.

Our In-Villa Thai Cooking Class is a hands-on session at 2,500 THB per person. A chef comes to your villa with all the shopping and equipment, and you cook four main courses together, finishing with mango sticky rice. Many guests do both across a week: a class one day, then a chef-cooked dinner later in the stay.

Pairing a chef with in-villa wellness

A private chef pairs naturally with in-villa wellness for a slower, more restorative few days. Guests often add a massage before dinner or a morning yoga session on the terrace.

Our Private Health and Wellness Experiences bring massage, yoga, fitness and breathwork to your villa, so a day can run from a sunrise session to a chef-prepared dinner without leaving home.

Who a private chef suits best

  • Families and groups in villas, where cooking for everyone is the main daily challenge.
  • Celebrations, such as an anniversary, a birthday or a special last night, which work best with 24 hours' notice so the chef can plan a multi-course meal.
  • Honeymooners wanting a private dinner at home rather than a busy restaurant.
  • Guests in remote villas with no restaurants within easy reach.
  • Anyone with specific dietary needs, which a private chef caters for far more easily than a restaurant.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a private chef cost in Koh Samui?

A private chef costs from 2,500 THB for breakfast and from 3,500 THB for lunch or dinner, as a flat fee for up to nine guests. A half day is 4,000 THB and a full day of cooking is 5,000 THB. Ingredients and a 20% shopping fee are added on top.

Are the prices per person or per group?

The chef fee is per group, not per person, and covers parties of up to nine guests. This makes a private chef especially good value for families and larger groups.

Do I pay for the chef's ingredients?

Yes. Ingredients are billed at cost plus a 20% shopping fee. Your chef shops at a local fresh market on the day, and you can agree a budget in advance.

Can the chef cater to allergies and dietary requirements?

Yes. All dietary requirements, allergies and preferences can be met, and menus are built around them. Send a short dietary brief before arrival so your chef can plan and shop accordingly.

How far in advance should I book a private chef?

Book as early as you can, especially for the December to March peak season. For special-occasion menus, confirm at least 24 hours ahead so the chef can source the right ingredients.

Can the chef cook food other than Thai?

Yes. Menus are fully customisable and arranged directly with your chef. Thai cuisine is the speciality, but other styles can be discussed when you plan the menu.

Is a private chef cheaper than eating out?

For groups it often is, because the chef fee is flat for up to nine guests and you only add the cost of ingredients. For larger parties the per-person cost of a chef-cooked meal at home is usually well below a comparable restaurant bill.

What is the difference between a private chef and a cooking class?

A private chef cooks for you; a cooking class teaches you to cook. The class is priced per person and includes the shopping and equipment, while the private chef is a flat fee per group for prepared meals.
