Easiest Way to Get Around Koh Samui

Getting around Koh Samui is easy once you know the options. A ring road of about 50 km loops the whole island, so most places are 30 to 40 minutes apart, and you can choose between taxis, Grab, shared songthaews, scooters, hire cars and private drivers depending on your budget and confidence.

How the island is laid out

Almost everything on Koh Samui sits on or just off the ring road that circles the coast. The busiest beaches, Chaweng and Lamai, are on the east coast. The airport, Bangrak and Bophut are on the north-east corner, Maenam runs along the north coast, and Nathon, the old town and main ferry port, is on the west. The hilly interior has waterfalls and viewpoints reached by steeper side roads.

As a rough guide, the airport is 15 to 20 minutes from Chaweng, Chaweng to Lamai takes about 15 minutes, and a lap of the whole island takes around an hour and a half without stops.

Taxis

Taxis wait at the airport, outside larger hotels and along the main tourist strips. They are air-conditioned and go door to door, but they rarely use the meter on Koh Samui, so agree the price before you set off. Ask your hotel what a fair fare is if you are unsure.

As a guide, expect around 400 to 600 THB from the airport to Chaweng, 200 to 300 THB for a short hop within the same area, and 500 to 800 THB to cross the island. Prices rise late at night.

Grab and ride-hailing apps

Grab works on Koh Samui and shows the price before you book, which takes the haggling out of it. There are fewer drivers than in Bangkok, so waits can be longer, especially late at night or away from Chaweng and Lamai. It is worth downloading before you arrive and linking a card.

Songthaews (shared pickup trucks)

Songthaews are pickup trucks with two benches in the back, and they run along the ring road as shared taxis. Wave one down, tell the driver where you are going, and confirm the price before you climb in; you pay at the end. They are the cheapest way to get between beaches by day, typically around 50 to 100 THB per person for shorter trips and more for longer ones.

They stop running regularly in the evening, and late-night rides are charged more like a private taxi. They stick to the main road, so they are less useful for the interior.

Renting a scooter

A scooter is the cheapest way to explore at your own pace, at around 200 to 300 THB a day, and rental shops are everywhere. It is also the island's biggest safety risk for visitors, so be honest about your experience.

Licence: carry your home licence with a motorbike category plus an International Driving Permit. Many travel insurance policies will not cover a scooter accident if you are unlicensed.
Helmet: always wear one. It is the law, and police checkpoints do stop riders without one.
Roads: traffic drives on the left. Hills in the interior are steep, gravel collects on bends, and roads get slippery after rain.
Rental: photograph the bike before you leave, check the brakes and lights, and avoid handing over your passport as a deposit if you can.

Renting a car

A hire car costs roughly 1,000 to 2,500 THB a day depending on the vehicle and season, and suits families, groups and anyone exploring the interior. You will need your licence and an International Driving Permit. Parking can be tight in central Chaweng, but is easy almost everywhere else.

Private driver or guided island tour
